Let’s all welcome 2022 and hope that we can start to see things change for the better this year. While we’re all settling back in to normal life again have you asked yourself ‘what do you want your 2022 to look like?’ We’re sure you have.
We all go into the new year with ideas, hopes, dreams and the dreaded resolutions. The usual ones like ‘I’m going to go to the gym.’ ‘I’m going to start my diet.’ When in reality we really want to do it and we may actually start doing it, but chances are it won’t last the long.
The biggest mistake that we all make is that we don’t plan, we don’t set goals or targets and we try to make big changes completely on day one. The best idea would be to aim for your goals and try and achieve them by making slight changes one day at a time. As the saying goes ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’!
Now, for business owners the new year is the perfect opportunity to put your plans into place. More often than not, you’ve spent a lot of the previous months analysing your business, working out any changes that need to be made or just changes you think could make things more efficient.
It might just be little things like are you organised enough? Do you keep a mental to do list in your head or do you write everything down? It’s more sensible to get things logged somewhere that you can tick off once they’re done.
Some people like to stick to what they know and put pen to paper which is great if that’s what works for you. There is a lot of different software available now which have to-do lists, calendars, reminders etc… Some of them you can save paperwork, assign staff, and even log timesheets and holidays. Fun fact to remember. Being organised reduces stress levels, so don’t forget your planner! (Or calendar) “Less mess equals less stress”
There are obviously pros and cons to all options, but you just have to look at which is going to make your life easiest and which you’re more likely to stick with.
Do you need a planner or a diary in your office so that everybody can see what’s happening and when? Do you have all important dates noted down? For example:
- Making Tax Digital for Vat – 1st April 2022
- Minimum wage increase – 1st April 2022
- National Insurance Increase – 6th April 2022
Having important dates constantly visible could help. Does everybody have easy access to the vital information? Sometimes more than one person knowing is a good thing.
Do you have a list of frequently used phone numbers that is accessible to everybody? That will save time keep looking the number up.
One of the biggest bugbears for a business owner is delegating. Are you guilty of thinking that you can do everything? We get it. It’s your baby and you’ve built it up from scratch with your own two hands. However, you need to look at the bigger picture. If you started to delegate a bit more, would your plans and goals be more achievable? They more than likely would. Maybe that’s something you can put in your plan…learn how to delegate better!
Have you revised your staff levels recently? Do you have enough staff to cover your current workload? Do you have a bit too much work for what your staff can cover but not enough to justify a new member of staff? Maybe you could you have somebody part time? There are lots of people out there that could help so have you considered outsourcing?

You can use the time to let all your team know your idea and your plans so that they know what your vision is. You could ask for their input and see what thoughts they have too. You never know they may have a great idea on how to put your plan in place. At the end of the day, it’s going to be your team that help you achieve your goals. You’re not going to get there without them! Communication is key.
